Welcome to the Department of Spanish in the School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures (SMLLC) at NUI Maynooth. The Department of Spanish is a dynamic, young department, with a focus on contemporary Spanish and Latin American Studies and additional offerings of modules in Linguistics, Chicano Studies, Catalan (with the support of the Institut Ramón Llull) and Portuguese (with the support of the Instituto Camões). With approximately 250 undergraduates, the Department is one of the largest centres for the study of Spanish in Ireland.
Spanish is offered at ab initio and non-beginner levels and students will have the opportunity to acquire or enhance language skills in our comprehensive and stimulating language programmes, and to deepen their knowledge and cultivate their love of Spanish and Latin American cultures through our innovative cultural, literary and linguistic courses.
Most of our undergraduate students study for a BA International, a four-year joint honours programme that includes a year studying or working as a teaching assistant in a Spanish-speaking country (see Study Abroad). Students can also take Spanish as part of the BA Joint Honours or as part of the BA European Studies, or as a minor subject in the BA Finance or with Law(BCL) and Arts.
The postgraduate taught and research programmes offered by the Department of Spanish aim to help students who already have a qualification in Spanish to develop their understanding and knowledge of important concepts in the literatures and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world and to enhance their analytical, creative and reflective skills in a lively intellectual environment.
The Department is located in the Arts Building on North Campus. (See map)
